Acoustic modular carpet tiles in woven vinyl, laid in a two-tone checkerboard in a lounge

Tile sizes, and what they change

Woven vinyl carpet tiles come in 50 × 50 cm and 100 × 100 cm, 3.20 to 3.50 mm thick on a 2.2 to 2.5 mm vinyl backing with fibreglass and acoustic felt. The smaller tile follows a curve, a doorway and a column base; the larger one reads as a sheet floor with fewer joints to look at.

Because the tiles lift out, a damaged piece is swapped from stock rather than taken up with the whole floor. Order a reserve with the project, from the same dye lot, so a phased refurbishment keeps one shade across the building.

Where this surface works

  • Offices and open-plan workplaces Open floors, call centres and coworking space where impact noise and replaceable tiles both matter.
  • Meeting rooms and boardrooms Reduced reverberation for calls and presentations.
  • Schools and universities Classrooms, libraries and corridors that take daily use.
  • Healthcare Clinics and waiting areas that need quieter, easy-clean floors.
  • Retail and showrooms Shops and showrooms where footfall and trolleys are noisy.
  • Public buildings One damaged tile can be lifted and replaced without touching the floor.
  • Residential buildings Apartments and shared common spaces in managed buildings.

What this surface does well

  • Material composition Woven vinyl fibres, far stronger than textile alternatives.
  • Acoustic backing A 2.2–2.5 mm vinyl backing with fibreglass and acoustic felt; it takes the edge off impact noise.
  • Modular design Square tiles can be replaced individually, cutting the cost of a full replacement.
  • Versatile aesthetics Tiles can be combined into patterns and colour blocks.
  • Tiles and cut shapes Die-cut to tile sizes, and to customer shapes on request. A single piece can be lifted and replaced after a spill or a repair. The cut edge stays clean, with no loose fibre ends.
  • Edges The weave is cut cleanly, so tile edges do not fray or shed yarn.
  • Core yarn options high-tenacity polyester core yarn is standard; for modular carpet a fibreglass core is preferred, as it reduces loose fibre at cut edges.

Tested performance, with the methods behind it

Acoustic modular carpet: questions we get asked

Does the felt backing make the room quieter?

The felt backing is what takes the edge off impact noise through the slab, which is what the room below hears. The tiles are made as an acoustic product, and the tile build has not been tested on its own yet: the figure we can quote to a test, ΔLw 21 dB to BS EN ISO 10140-3, was measured on the wall to wall construction, and that report is on the resources page. With the felt layer added we expect the tile build to measure at least as well, and the tile report is available on request. Sound absorption is a separate measurement: αw 0.05 to EN ISO 354 is the same reference figure, so for the sound inside a reverberant room, the ceiling and walls are where the budget goes.

Can a single tile be replaced?

Yes. The tiles lift out, so a damaged piece is swapped from stock without taking up the floor. Order a small reserve with the project and keep it on site.

Are the tiles laid loose or glued?

It depends on the substrate and the traffic; the installation document for the line states which method applies. Ask for it before the fit-out week rather than during it.
