A gym floor, Kuala Lumpur
A Kuala Lumpur gym, where the floor runs from the strength area through the free-weight zone and does not stop at the equipment.
The project at a glance
- Interior — Gym: strength machines, free weights, cardio
- Location — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- Surface — Woven vinyl flooring, 4 mm total at 2,400 gsm
- Why it suits the brief — No pile to flatten under racks, mop clean, EN 13501-1 Cfl-s1
What this interior demanded
Gym floors concentrate load in small places. Racks, benches and machine feet sit on pads the size of a palm, and a floor with a pile or a soft backing deforms around them until the surface is a set of dents. A dense woven face over a full vinyl backing spreads that load without losing the pattern, and because there is no pile, sweat and chalk stay on the surface instead of soaking in.
Cleaning is the other half of the brief. A gym is cleaned between sessions, not overnight, so the routine has to be a mop rather than an extraction machine. Entrance matting at the door line stops grit before it reaches the training floor, which is what keeps a dark weave looking dark.

The same construction today
The build is unchanged: a 1.0 mm woven vinyl face on a 3.0 mm PVC foam backing, 4 mm in total at 2,400 gsm, supplied in 200 cm rolls and cold-welded on site. Colour fastness is tested to BS EN ISO 105-B02 and B-04 at grade 4–4.5, and the construction carries EN 13501-1 Cfl-s1.
